Religious Education

Valley Road Academy is made up of pupils and staff who originate from many nationalities, cultures and faith groups. As a school, we aim to celebrate this diversity and offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our pupils, including new arrivals and non-native English speakers.

We believe that Religious Education provides an opportunity to celebrate and foster awareness of these differences within our school and the wider world. It gives children an opportunity to celebrate their beliefs and share them with others. We love to celebrate various religious festivals throughout the year to help us learn more about them including Eid, Easter, Chinese New Year and Diwali.

The Aims of Religious Education

At Valley Road Academy, we aim to help pupils to:

  • acquire and develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain
  • develop an understanding of the influences of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures.
  • develop a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold beliefs that are different to their own.
  • enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development by:
    • developing awareness of fundamental questions of life raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them
    • responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions, and to their own understanding and experience
    • reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.
