Music Hub
This half term, Year 5 have started a project with Seventeen Nineteen, Inspired and Sunderland Music Hub. We started the project with a visit to Seventeen Nineteen on Tuesday 28th November and this week the project continued, in school, when we had a professional musician and songwriter visit us to complete workshops with both Year 5 classes. The project aims to teach the children about the musical heritage of the North East, focussing on folk music and sea shanties. This week, we started composing our own folk songs linked to our topic of plastic pollution and sustainability.
Science Week
Litter Pick
Not on our patch! This week, we have been litter picking in our local area. We will be using this field work to write a persuasive letter to the council.
Persuasive Speech
As part of our reducing plastic waste topic, we have been writing a persuasive speech about plastic pollution. We have used facts, figures and statistics from our geography lessons to support our views. Considering appropriate vocabulary has been a key element to ensure our writing is persuasive. Everyone has worked extremely hard and produced writing to be very proud of.
Class Novel
This term our class novel is Mother Earth Is Weeping.

Design Technology
In Design Technology we have been finding out about how bridges are made and what makes them stable. We used art straws to create different trusses then added weights to identify which design could hold more weight. Next, we looked at how arches are made. We used card to make arches of different heights to find out which arch would distribute weight more effectively.
Parent Crafts
Welcome back everyone. It was lovely seeing everyone at our Halloween / Autumn craft session. We hope you all enjoyed the half term break and are raring to go this half term. In class, we have started our next topic called ‘Reducing Plastic Waste’. We will be finding out about the impact of plastic pollution and identifying solutions to prevent and reduce plastic waste. It would be helpful if children could be encouraged to research this at home to help them in class.
